Self Publishing Manual
About Self Publishing ManualFor those who are interested in the world of self publishing, it is probably well worth their time to do a 'Net search and look at some of the excellent self publishing manuals that are available there. These manuals may be in traditional book form, sold as CD's or DVD's, or as ebooks. Whatever format one chooses, there are a lot of good tips and ideas that are valuable to an author. No matter which of the manuals is chosen, there seems to be a common thread as to what the publishing process really involves. The five main stages that most self publishing authors seem to identify are the stage where the author is considering writing the book and exactly what it will contain, followed by a planning phase to decide about publishing options, book layout and design, actually content and research, and so on. Once those preliminary decisions are made, the author can sit and actually write the book (which many experts say is actually the easiest part!). Once the book is written, there is (as part of the writing process) proofreading , editing, corrections, and re-writing to do. After that process is complete, the book should be ready to go to print. Again, at this stage, there are many decisions to be made about the type of printing options that will be used, design considerations, and so on. After those decisions are made and the book is actually produced, the promotions stage is reached. At this point, it is imperative to ge the book into the hands of as many reviewers as possible, try to place the book in retail outlets that will result in sales, gain publicity for the author, and so on. Even this brief description of the process points up that getting a book from the original idea to the hands of a reader is far more complex than most people would ever imagine, and that is precisely why it is such a good idea to enlist the help of one of these manuals! Most manuals will address such topics as writing in specific categories, that is, what differences exist between romance novel writing, children's books, and poetry collections. Obviously, all the genres have very different requirements and characteristics, and it is very worthwhile to find out what is known about each. It is also very worthwhile to find out how book writing differs from magazine writing. Another point of interest for a new author has to do with all of the different publishing options that are available. Just as a self publishing manual is available in many different formats, it is possible to publish a book in various formats. A new author especially will need to consider whether to produce her or his book as a traditional hardback or paperback, sell it as a CD or DVD presentation, or generate it as an ebook. |
