About Short Run Book Printing

There are so many publishing options available these days. It is more confusing than it was in the past when a publishing house said 'yea' or 'nay' and that was the end of it. These days, and author can turn to self publishing if there is no interest from a traditional publishing house, and, in many cases, self publishing is the best option to achieve the goals of the author. Not every author is looking to produce a blockbuster best seller (though most would probably not mind if that happened). Many times, an author is looking to sell to a very specific market - their students in a college course, people who are taking a dog training class from them, those who are interested in the same hobby as the author, or simply friends and family with whom the author wants to share his or her work. For these authors, self publishing, and, perhaps, short run book printing, might be the very best option.

Short run book printing is a term that simply refers to the fact that not many books will be printed. A short 'Net search will show, though, that different publishers and printers consider short run book printing to be any number of books produced between five and fifty thousand, which is quite a spread! Depending on the number of books that an author realistically expects to sell, and if that author is looking at self publishing (where the author bears the printing costs), a short run book printing might be the most realistic way to consider the printing process a success. The author does not have to pay for more books than she or he honestly expects to need, there is no need to warehouse a bundle of unsold books, and the books that are printed are used.

There are many companies in the United States and in the UK that specialize in the self publishing area, and almost all of them offer short run book printing services, since they understand that not every book needs a million copy run. The range of services available in the short run area are as varied as are the services in traditional printing. Books can be hard back or paper back, they can have very fine parchment or cheap standard paper (or many many options in between), they can be printed using a variety of fonts, print styles or sizes, and typesets, and they can have jackets (or no jackets) that are very simple single color and pre-designed, or they can be fine works of art with a variety of colors, art work, pictures, blurbs, and so on. The binding of a book can be cheap and utilitarian, or it can be a fine ribbon trim work of art. The selections are practically endless, which is wonderful news for the author.
